I sat today and read all the reviews regarding Gateway and eMachines, now I know it wasn't me. I purchased an eMachine approximately 5 years ago and had trouble with it the second it came out of the box and has been ongoing each day. Customer Service at eMachines was of no help whatsoever, software didn't work properly, wouldn't work on a wireless set up, kept crashing, wiping out the hard drive, it actually would reformat the hard drive all by itself at no set interval of time. At that point the PC was only 2 weeks old, I took it back to the store, CircuitCity (not sure who is worse, Circuit City or Gateway), they wouldn't even look at it unless I gave them $100. I should have smashed the piece of junk in the middle of the store. I did however make a scene on my way out of the store to the fact that eMachines are junk. I contacted eMachines / Gateway again and was told that I could send the PC to them, at my own expense and risk, and if the issue was due to an error on their part, they would fix it, if not, I would have to pay them. Since all I did was take it out of the box and plug it in, I don't see how it could be my fault, however I spoke to the IT person at work about the problems, and when he was done laughing at me for buying a Gateway product to being with, he took the machine, and worked on it for a few weeks, deleted a bunch of Gateway programs, and said "NEVER" let it do any updates. So needless to say in 2008 when I was looking at laptops, I spoke to the IT guy first. The eMachine still here, no one every really uses it much anymore since it barely works, cd drive is dead (again) and we have to unplug the printer and monitor from it so it will boot up...everytime.
I urge people to read these reviews prior to buying any product. Gateway has been purchased by an Asian company but there is no indication of any change. During main time frame of issues, I did file a complaint with the BBB in CA against Gateway / eMachines, they ignored BBB and never responded that I am aware of.
On the rating portion of this review I chose 1 star and only because I couldn't choose less.
