Lack of Support and Communication Made a Passionate Role Unbearable
|
I worked with Hokali as an after-school program instructor and was excited to bring my passion and skills to their program. Unfortunately, my experience was marked by a consistent lack of support and communication from both Hokali and the schools they work with.
From the beginning, I faced logistical challenges, such as the back gate being locked at the school where I taught, despite requesting multiple times for it to be open. I was also moved out of my designated teaching space in the cafeteria without notice, disrupting my classes and making it difficult to provide the best experience for the students. It felt as though my needs as an instructor were never prioritized.
I tried to address these issues early on, but instead of being supported or having my concerns addressed, I was given restrictions that made my job even harder. When I had to firmly ask a disruptive student to be quiet, instead of having a constructive conversation with me about it, the response was to place someone in my class to monitor me. This made me feel mistrusted and unsupported, despite the fact that I had been upfront about the challenges I was facing.
Throughout my time with Hokali, it seemed that they were more concerned with maintaining a good relationship with the schools than supporting their instructors. I felt dismissed and unheard, and ultimately, this lack of support led to me no longer being a part of the program. I put a lot of effort and passion into my role, and it’s disappointing to see how little care was given in return.
I hope Hokali can improve their communication and support for their instructors in the future, so that others don’t have to face the same frustrations and challenges I did.
